October 2026 Featured Pick: Good Seeds' Colombia Huila Decaf

For October, the featured pick is Good Seeds' Colombia Huila Decaf, a Colombian decaf from this month's Roaster of the Month, and it earns its own feature here.

Decaf that doesn't drink like an afterthought. The processing holds onto more of the original flavour than most decaf methods, so you get mild dried fruit, caramel sweetness and a mellow, complex acidity, the kind of definition that usually disappears when the caffeine does. The beans come from Huila, between the Central and Eastern Andes in the Magdalena Valley, where most producers are smallholders farming less than three hectares, with the attention to every cherry that scale allows.

The decaffeination uses ethyl acetate derived from fermented sugarcane, a natural and gentle process. The beans are steamed to open their pores, soaked to selectively remove the caffeine, then re-steamed to clear any trace of the process, leaving the flavour intact. The dried fruit stays lively while the caramel grounds it, and there is enough sweetness to carry a milk drink, so a late flat white still tastes like coffee. Roasted locally in Perth.
